Social Networking

I’ve personally been Tweeting for a few months now. But I use the term “tweeting” loosely.  I’m still not completely familier with the process and I certainly don’t have a strategy. Although I think it’s kind of cool.

Recently I started paying more attention to it for a number of reasons, my mother was a librarian at a conference recently and she attended a meeting on Twitter. I had a conversation with her, and then the next day I saw John Reese’s e-mail on Twitter. It seems there is much twitter about Twitter. So what is Twitter?

According to the Twitter FAQ, “Twitter is for staying in contact and with friends, no matter where you are or what you do.”

Wikipedia says: “Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send updates via SMS, instant messaging, e-mail, to the Twitter website, or one of the many Twitter applications now available.”

principle Twitter asks the question: “What are you doing?” and can a brief update (your tweets are limited to 140 characters) to your followers (family, friends, colleagues, customers, potential customers, etc.).

Twitter allows you to send and receive updates (or tweets) via your browser, e-mail, instant messaging clients and SMS (using your mobile phone). Regardless of where you are, you can Tweet!

I have not been following Twitter since day 1, so I’m not going to comment on its evolution, but I will speculate that if its popularity grows, as more and more marketers use 2 things are inevitable:

1. Twitter etiquette rules will continue to evolve as we know what we like and dislike, and as we respond to the inevitable abuse of Twitter (do not mean to sound negative, but it happens with every exciting new opportunity ‘people eventually abuse it).

2. More and more companies will jump on board and try to get on the conversation.

Start Twitter (or is it Ting Two?)

Remember, when you first join Twitter may feel like a lonely place. If you do not after all and no one follows you, you find yourself the question “what is the point?” I heard many people say they just do not get. In fact, I said to myself.

The key is to find the tweets you want to follow so that you can use your finger on the pulse of your niche. The following key is to start building your followers. More on that in a minute.

How Twitter can help your company?

The more contact you have with a potential customer, the more likely you are to their business. You can stay top of mind “via Twitter. Let them know what’s new in your industry, your company, etc. You will be a source of quick news flashes for them.

Here are just some of the benefits of Twitter - It reminds people that you exist

- It shows people that you have something to say

- It appears that your people

- Allows you to specify new offers, sales and breaking news immediately

- Allows you a more casual relationship

- You can use Twitter for your social bookmarking submissions.

- You can ask for referrals, suggestions, feedback and help, and people will respond.

Twitter is fun and adds to the new language we are constantly evolving. Eg, “Twitterference” the intrusion of twitter updates on your phone makes it difficult to talk on your phone.

Find Followers:

Start reaching your friends, family, mailing, etc. You can also link your Twitter to your e-mail signature line, add links to your website and blog. Give your Twitter account in your newsletter.

Twitter Rules

A cardinal rule (that is in your interest to follow): if you use Twitter as a pure marketing tool, you will lose followers quickly. As with all forms of social media is about creating a conversation and exchange of news’ it’s not about you shoving your sales message their throat.

Tweets are limited to 140 characters. This is to enable them to be easily sent through mobile SMS systems.

You are not able to embed HTML, except for hyperlinks. (But they are not left, so they will not help you in your quest for SEO backlinks) Bonus: Twitter automatically uses the service TinyURL to shorten links.

Tweet Not too much or too little. There is no magic, and the number varies depending on your audience. Some people say do not update more than once per hour. Others say no more than one or two times per day. I tend to be one or two times a day camp. If there is breaking news and some days you just have to work more often than it is OK. If your tweets are valuable information people will be more tolerant of frequent updates.

On the other hand, if you also quiet, the people have nothing to follow so make sure you find that balance and Tweet just enough to keep people informed, but not angry.

Do not forget that your profile shows a history of all your tweets, so if a new person comes along and sees that not many tweets you can decide you are not worth following. Even if your past tweets not informative or interesting, you lose a number of potential followers.

You’ll discover that sometimes you get involved in personal conversation with someone. Try to avoid doing too much. Not everyone is interested in your personal communication. If you still need to do this, put the @ symbol for a person’s name indicating that this message is for them.

One thing to keep in mind about personal tweets - some people who are not following your response to the person with whom you talk. This means that only half of the conversation. One suggestion is the word of your Tweet so that the spectators an idea of what your talking about. That way they can feel more included in the conversation.

Trust and Twitter

With so much hype in the market, people are really looking for a company that can trust. You can use the confidence of potential customers by allowing them to get to know you and them with information. Twitter allows you to do so.

A great tip: look at your own Tweet History ‘is the information valuable is the trust? Would you want yourself?

Get two tax!

It may take some trial and error, and you probably want to check some information on two others to a sense of style. But do not be too long lurking ‘check it out and then jump on in.

Twitter was created in 2006 by Jack Dorsey. It has gained extensive notability and popularity worldwide. It is often described as the “SMS of Internet”.

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users’ updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length which are displayed on the user’s profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers). Twitter extremely valuable to any e-commerce site.

Simplicity has played an important role in Twitter’s success. People are eager to connect with other people and Twitter makes that simple.

Online business

Most people shop online for convenience rather than customer service. And while inroads have been made into providing better customer service online, the personal aspect is often still missing. It’s the ability to have conversations with customers that makes Twitter extremely valuable to any e-commerce site.

Ø      Listen to Your Customers

One of the best things about twitter is that it gives you a readymade platform, in which the online business can directly communicate with its customers; listen to their feedback & demands. Brick-and-mortar retailers have the benefit of physical presence of their customers when they are making purchases. But, e-commerce merchants may be unaware of customer problems or questions unless they are contacted directly or worse, if the customer publishes a complaint online. With Twitter, an e-commerce business can monitor what people are saying about its brand and products and respond with assistance.

Ø      Be Personable

Twitter also gives the online business to create & build upon their brand perception. Internet shopping is usually impersonal. Ecommerce sites often try to connect with customers via blogs or comments, but Twitter makes it much easier to have direct conversations with customers and also show a bit of personality.

A Bit of PR Is Fine, Too

It’s okay to use Twitter to provide useful information to your customers as long as you are clear about your intentions and can do a bit of listening as well. Sometimes customers just want to know when you have a sale. In fact, Dell was so successful in using Twitter to alert followers about sale items that it has now set up a separate Dell Outlet Twitter account that offers discounts exclusively to followers on Twitter.

Ø      Getting Started

The best way to get started on Twitter is to learn as much about it as possible. Sign up for an account, listen to what people are saying and find interesting people and companies to follow.

Ø      Using Twitter for Your Site

Once you’ve decided to use Twitter to promote your online business and website design , it’s important to fill out your company profile and upload an image that your customers will recognize. Make sure to identify the people within your company who will be monitoring and using the account, and the more people tweeting the better. Unless you already have a very reputable and popular brand, your company will probably need to use your Twitter account for a while before people will want to follow it. Encourage your customers to follow you on Twitter by adding a link to your website, your emails, business cards and any other place with company contact information.

Ø      Twitter Tools

There are some tools to make Twitter easier to use. For example, Twitter offers widgets on its settings page which you can use to put your Twitter updates right on your website. You can automatically send updates to twitter by using twitter-feed to import items from any RSS feeds you have, a good way to let customers know about updates from your blog or featured items on your site. Monitor what people are saying about your company and products by using tools like Twitter’s search or Tweet Scan. You might also try applications such as Tweet Deck, twhirl, or Twitterific to post updates and have conversations on Twitter.

From a business perspective, social sites offer a chance for potential customers and influence purchasing behavior as online social networkers are three times more likely to trust their online community of peers on advertising to make purchasing decisions .* And, according to a survey by Nielsen , consumer recommendations are the most credible form of advertising by 78% of respondents .*

How to use Twitter, the most celebrated social networking tool of the moment, and generate more business? Here is the formula I use for customers who use twitter. The same principles will work for every company, because it is not about the product or service you have, it is about the people and creating a social buzz that will lead company for you.

Social marketing has grown exponentially for the last few years. From the beginning of the blogs, MySpace and Facebook networking sites like linked and the newest star: Twitter.

What makes social marketing so popular? Simply put, human nature. We all want to feel that we are part of a community whether in the local community, such as churches, teams, etc., or in the online community, such as Twitter. Thanks to the internet, our sense of community people from across the United States and beyond our borders bring us to the global community.

From a business perspective, social sites offer a chance for potential customers and influence purchasing behavior as online social networkers are three times more likely to trust their online community of peers in the advertising to make purchasing decisions .* And, according to a survey Nielsen, consumer recommendations are the most credible form of advertising by 78% of respondents .*

In other words, if someone is recommended for your business by a co-worker, neighbor, friend or member of the online network, which is 78% more likely to buy your company. Because of this fact, 81% of people in the market, respondents said they were spending as much, if not more, social media than they do (or had) in the traditional advertising .*

So how do you use Twitter, the most celebrated social networking tool of the moment, and generate more business? Here is the formula I use for customers who use twitter. The same principles will work for every company, because it is not about the product or service you have, it is about the people and creating a social buzz that will lead company for you.

First, of course, you must set up an account on twitter, if you do not have. When setting up your account, make sure that you have a picture of yourself or a representative of your company. Since the key to networking is to twitter followers, the photo makes people more likely to follow you. Also include your location (local search), a link to your website (http://ideasthatwork.net) and brief information about your company. For a more professional appearance is best to create a custom background for your twitter site.

Side Note: TweetDeck.com is a great tool to help you manage the twitter universe.

Here are some basics you should know before you start two tax:

* A follower is someone who overlooks your updates.

* Following refers to the act of you following other people.

* The @ symbol is placed before a user name in the Tweet to reply to another user, and this is reflected in the main stream twitter

* The # (hashtag) is used to help you sort by subject. For example, you can use # survivor to Tweet with other Survivor fans.

* Direct messages go only to the user that your messaging

Once your account is set to begin posting at least 1 Tweet, so people will know what your profile you have.

Then you need to find people to follow. If you really in this business to get referrals, I suggest you do not follow the person on twitter. Place a search for key words that describe your business. If you want to concentrate on the local market, the use of the city and to search. If you have a wedding planner, look for the word “marriage”. This search can easily be done within twitter by using the search box at the top of your homepage.

There are also very well respected member of the twitter community you want to follow based on your business. For example, business owners want to follow in May Business Week (@ bizweek). If you are a coffee lover, you may want to follow Starbucks (@ Starbucks). MrTweet.com can help you find people you want, but remember you do not need (or you) everyone follows.

Once you’re following, you see that people start to follow you back and you’ll also see that people after you that you do not follow first. (All these below can confusing, since it is easier to hang with the practice) Remember that you want potential customers or people who can lead you to potential customers. You must also follow people in similar businesses, as long as they do not directly compete with you (unless, of course, you want to know what the competition does!) And if people follow you, check their profile for the next return. There are hundreds of thousands of people on twitter, and not everyone will be in your target market.

Now that you are building your list of followers, you need to start two budget on a regular basis. You can give tips related to your business, some people famous quotes or jokes, others are focused on the daily events aimed at. I trade off between tax optimization tweets, projects I’m working on this day in history info, etc. I am also tweet about everyday things, like the forces of technology working against me - Argh! The more fair and transparent you are, the more people like you and with you in conversation.

Twitter is also very good for self promotion - to a point. Nothing is worse than follow someone who only talks about their products, services or only on their own blog or material objects. It is a good idea to “retweet” or to the good information that others post. Within the 140 characters can be left for specific information anywhere on the web, including your website. Everything you need to do is copy the URL or web address of the page you want to link and paste it into twitter. Often you find that the Web address for the link is too long for twitter, takes too much space. In that case, you use a site like tinyurl.com to shorten the link.

A large part of twitter increasingly concerned participate. You can sit and read the twitter stream but when you start with the answer to the people you will begin to others and bring them into your world. The next thing you know, people will check your website and refer you (via twitter) to others. If you are really concerned you really reap the benefits. And, if you work with web analytics on your website, you can see the movement that refers to your twitter, and how much of that traffic converts into business.

Once you’ve mastered the “two-tax” you want to use twitter in more ways to integrate twitter with Facebook and the addition of the twitter stream to your website.

There is no doubt that the Internet has forever changed word-of-mouth advertising. The power of the people is now greater than ever and is a part of everyone’s daily life. Using twitter as a part of your online marketing campaign you can influence the buzz about you and your company.

PS … can you me twitter: @ tkimsey
